WOW! Day 1

WOW!

I've haven't heard that word used so much since I arrived in Abu Dhabi.  Sister Pam was suitable impressed with all the glitz and glamour of the city.

I was hoping Pam would write a guest entry for me but time and circumstances didn't allow it.  Now she is home with no computer due to being robbed while away.  I know what I'd like to do to the @#*% who did it and caused so much trauma to her & her whanau and damage to her home.  As she said, it's not just the material things that have been taken, it's the loss of photos and genealogy on her computer.  Instead of relaxing and sorting her photos from her latest adventure she's dealing with insurance companies, getting 4 windows repaired, buying a new computer and all the 101 other things involved when something like this happens.

Back to the Wow!

I began by meeting Pam from her Emirates bus downtown on the Corniche.  I was parked and waiting a good half hour early (any excuse to get out of school) and had begun pacing by the time the bus finally arrived - late.

What a joy to see her after so long.  You don't realise how much you miss family when you don't see them regularly.

Off we set in my rental to give her a taste of Abu Dhabi driving.  We sightsee along the Corniche admiring all the tall buidings and glistening water.  Everything was sparkling in the bright sunlight.  Abu Dhabi was putting on a good show for it's visitor.

We arrived back on Reem Island to more Wow and I showed Pam our apartment.  After a quick tour of the Boutiq Mall downstairs and the fabulous podium with swimming pools I headed back to work, leaving her to sleep or swim.

After work I raced home to find her downstairs relaxing.

After a cuppa I headed upstairs for my final weigh-in for the biggest loser.  Having lost 8kg I was feeling confident but sadly was pipped at the post by another woman who'd lost a slightly higher percentage of body weight.  However, I did win 400 AED for the most points, although I had to fight for it as another decided she'd won it.  Pocketing the money we headed home for a quick bite before the next stage.

Tuesday night is Yas night where you can go and walk/run/bike the Formula 1 track so we head out there.  After many wrong turns and u-turns and stops we finally get to the right entrance.  We could see the track but just couldn't find the right turning to get there.  Road signs here leave a lot to be desired and I was relieved to finally make it as the petrol tank was looking emptier by the minute.

I was surprised to find so many people there so after parking we waltzed through the gates and follow the walk signs, dodging cyclists.

I didn't mention that I'd had three stitches in my foot (refer to the earlier blog of the cosmotologist) for the past 10 days and had only got them out the previous evening.

After 10 or 15 minutes walking the sole of my foot is getting very sore so I decide I can't go on.  We realise there is no off ramp and either have to turn back or continue around the whole track.  Grandstands obscure our view so it's difficult to decide which option is best when a golf cart comes along with a woman and child on the back.  Waving it down I ask for a ride and he offers to take one of us.  No good!  So he says he'll come back and directs us to a meeting point.  Right in the middle of the track!  So we wait, and wait and wait.  Eventually he returns and we get the royal treatment, handing out cold bottles to water to weary cyclists as we make our way back to the starting point.  I was very grateful for the ride as I had visions of me not being able to climb mountains in Switzerland in a few days time.

After a long drive home we grab a bite to eat and settle in for a good night's sleep.

WOW!
